A women living on the streets of Rome, who was said to be missing British girl Madeleine McCann has actually been revealed to be a 21-year-old Swedish national.
The English-speaking woman sparked an alert that she may be Maddie McCann. However, even though the theory had been reported by a number of people to the authorities, it was quickly determined that she was not the missing girl because her eye does not bear the distinctive blemish which appears to run down from Maddie’s pupil.
She has now been identified as Embla Jauhojarvi by Italian authorities. While Italian officers had found it difficult to determine who she was after she was found sleeping rough in Rome, her father contacted police to say she was definitely not Maddie, but his daughter.
Ms Jauhojarvi’s father said his daughter had vanished after travelling to Italy six months ago to study. The woman was initially believed to be English, though she had no ID or passport.
Maddie’s parents, Kate and Gerry, are understood to have asked the Met Police to look into claims that the woman could have been Maddie, which were pushed out outline.
They issued a statement saying: “Thank you all for contacting us regarding this child. We have passed on to Operation Grange. They do not believe this is Madeleine.”
Madeleine McCann would actually be thirteen now. The little girl disappeared when she was three while on a family holiday to Portugal, and she has never been seen since.
She disappeared from her bed in a holiday apartment in the resort of Praia da Luz in the Algarve on May 3rd 2007, sparking what has been one of the biggest and most expensive missing-person hunts in modern history. While there have been several ‘sightings,’ none have been found to be Madeleine.
