A prankster managed to change the “Hollywood” sign into “Hollyweed,” using a tarp to change the O’s to E’s, according to LA Police.
Although the suspect was caught on camera, his race and height could not be estimated, but it is suspected to be a man.
The prankster was caught on video camera using tarps to cover the O’s on the “Hollywood” sign overlooking Los Angeles, transforming them to E’s, according to LA Police Officer Christopher Garcia, who works in the security services division.
This occurred between midnight and 2 a.m. local time. Police can’t tell the height or race of the prankster due to the fact that it was dark and raining, but it is suspected to be a man, according to Garcia.
The “Hollyweed” sign stayed up until 2pm Eastern Time. Estevan Montemayor, the spokesman for LA City Councilman David Ryu had promised the sign would be back to normal, and it was restored at around 2pm.
“We don’t know who did it but park rangers are going up there very soon to take down the draping that was put on top of the ‘O’ to alter the sign,” Montemayor said Sunday morning.
There are security measures to keep the Hollywood sign safe from vandalism, such as sensors around the letters that would trigger an alarm for the police. However, it is possible to avoid them, which is probably what happened. There is a road that can give access to the sign from behind. “We believe this person came from behind the sign,” Garcia said.
According to Betsy Isroelit from Hollywood Sign Trust, the last time the sign was vandalized to “Hollyweed” was in 1976.
In light of the recent legalization of recreational marijuana use in California, it makes sense that the vandalism took place around this timing
