Streaming service Tidal, run by Jay-Z, lost Kanye West over a $20 million dispute.
According to the media outlet TMZ:
“Sources connected to Tidal tell TMZ, Kanye has been unhappy with the company for a long time. We’re told Kanye has complained the company owes him money — more than $3 million.
Our sources say a month ago Kanye’s lawyer sent a letter to Tidal, saying the company was in breach and the contract was terminated. Over the next 2 weeks lawyers for both sides tried to resolve the conflict but failed. We’re told 2 weeks ago Kanye’s lawyer fired off a second letter declaring again the contract was over.”
The decision comes before the launch of Jay-Z’s latest album 4:44, on which he has a track where he raps “You gave him 20 million without thinkin’ / He gave you 20 minutes on stage, fuck was he thinkin’?” This most likely alludes to the 2015 Tidal product launch that was part of a longer jab on “kill Jay-Z.”
Kanye claims that with the release of Saint Pablo, his new work brought in 1.5 million new Tidal subscribers, which as part of his contract meant he was entitled to a bonus, which he didn’t receive. As well as that, Kanye has yet to be paid for his music videos which are available via the service.
On the other side, Tidal claims that Kanye didn’t deliver on several products that he had promised, including the same music videos in question. Both sides do seem probable. And although Kanye often appears crazy, these claims seem reasonable.
Tidal went on to send a letter to Kanye after his departure that will sue him if he signs up with another streaming service, which of course will lead to Kanye West counter-suing Tidal and Jay-Z.
