Juan Martin del Potro of Argentina pulled a major upset as he defeated Roger Federer in four sets to book a place in the semi-finals of the US Open.
Juan Martin Del Potro who is ranked on the 24th spot won the game 7-5 3-6 7-6 6-4 to advance to the semi-final in front of a huge amount of his supporters at the arena in New York.
He will now face Rafael Nadal who won his quarter final clash against Russia’s Andrew Rublev
This victory means there will be no meeting between Nadal and Federer for another year as they have never faced each other in this competition.
Nadal is now guaranteed to keep his number one ranking position ahead of Federer.
Federer Not Up To Standard
Federer couldn’t match Del Potro who was almost perfect all through the match up.
“I was thinking about more than just tonight,” Federer said after the game. “My head was stable all through and I just knew the game was going to be hard.”
Del Potro also beat Federer in 2009 to win his first and only Grand Slam title and has now repeated the feat later almost 10 years later at the Arthur Ashe Stadium to get one step towards his next Grand Slam title.
