Elon Musk Releases Pictures of his Underground Tunnels

After proposing the idea of reducing traffic through the use of underground tunnels, Elon Musk has released photos of his underground tunnels dug up by his own tunneling machines.

Elon Musk created a tunneling machine that theoretically speeds up the tunneling process by almost tenfold.

Musk’s machine began digging the tunnel as part of a demonstration at Space X’s Hyperloop Pod Competition last weekend, and he just released photos of the underground tunnel so far.

“The Bore-ing Company”

After presenting a proposal for a company at the Hyperloop Pod Competition to lighten traffic through the use of underground tunnels in January 2016, Elon Musk has been working on developing what he calls the “Boring Company.”

About a year later, Musk said that he could begin the construction of a tunnel by the end of February, and it seems he has been making good on his promise.

Musk’s team began digging the tunnel last weekend, and plans to construct a full-fledged tunnel using his own tunneling technology. Elon Musk Tweeted a photo of his machine nd of the tunnel so far.

How Can This be Useful?

Tunneling machines already exist, but Musk’s “Boring Company” is unique in that it creates machines that would make tunneling much faster and easier.

This could make underground transit more popular and would be a solution to heavy traffic in urban areas.

Alleviating traffic will also in turn reduce fuel consumption and carbon emissions as less cars wait in traffic and therefore, in theory, spend less time on the road.

Musk’s boring machine would also be useful for SpaceX’s mission to settle a colony on Mars.

The machine could be used to create tunnels on Mars, in order to create “underground habitats” to protect people from the extreme cold,  low pressure and high radiation on the Red Planet.
