It was announced that the USA television station had order a pilot that focused on the murders of Biggie Smalls and Tupac Shakur. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the series will be titled “Unsolved”. The story will be written by the writer of Suits, Kyle Long. The pilot episode will be directed by Anthony Hemingway, who is well-known for his work on The People v. O.J. Simpson episodes.
A key figure in the pilot series will be Greg Kading, a former LAPD detective. The story follows Kading in investigating the murders and what he experienced in the process. Each of the murders were not even a year apart, but Kading ended up spending years to discover who was behind the deaths. The former detective eventually came out with his own book, titled ‘Murder Rap: The Untold Story of Biggie Smalls and Tupac Shakur Murder Investigations’. This material will support the structure of the series’ pilot.
The killer was never found for neither of the two rap artists’ cases. According to Kading, he mentions in his book that Suge Knight and Sean Combs were responsible for the two young artists being assassinated. He went on to share how evidence was suppressed by the LAPD. Kading alleged that there were tapes that had the confessions of hired hit men. And Kading said just as he was about to solve the case, they removed him from the investigation.
Detective Kading isn’t the only one to share his view on these controversial cases. There have been several other books and movies produced about the two murders. Even the National Geographic released their own documentary series, which was titled ‘The 90s: The Last Great Decade?’ The segment was dedicated to the life of Tupac Shakur. Biopics have been created about the authors as well. Biggie Smalls’ biopic was released in 2009 (Notorious), while Tupac is expected to have his in 2017 (All Eyez on Me).
